Hamid S. Aziz - Sura: 15. Al-Hijr - The Rock

  1. ALIF LAM RA. Those are the ayats (signs or verses) of Revelation and of a clear Reading (Quran) (or that clarifies).

  2. Many a time will those who disbelieve wish they had surrendered (obeyed or been Muslims).

  3. Leave them to eat and enjoy the good things of life and let hope beguile them, but they shall come to know!

  4. We never did destroy a community but there was a fixed term decreed for it.

  5. No nation can hasten on its appointed time, nor put it off.

  6. But they say, "O you to whom the Reminder (the Quran) has been sent down! Verily, you are possessed.

  7. "Why do you not bring us the angels if you do tell the truth?"

  8. We sent not down the angels save as a Fact (for a just or right cause, effect or reason); but then (if We did) they would have no respite.

  9. Verily, We have revealed (sent down) the Reminder, and, verily, We are its Guardian.

  10. We, verily, sent Messengers before you among the sects of men in past ages.

  11. But there never came a messenger to them but they did mock him.

  12. Even so do We let it traverse the heart of the guilty.

  13. They will not believe therein, though the example of those of past times is before them.

  14. But had We opened to them a Gate of Heaven and they had continued to ascend through it,

  15. They would only say, "Our eye-sight is only intoxicated; nay, we have been bewitched by sorcery (or hypnotized)!"

  16. And We have placed in the sky the Signs of the Zodiac (or mansions or constellations of stars), and have made them beautiful to the beholders;

  17. And We have guarded them from every accursed (rejected, pelted) devil (or evil spirit);

  18. But any that steal a hearing, there follows him a bright flaming fire (or shooting star).

  19. And the earth have We spread out and placed on it firm mountains, and have caused to grow upon it of everything in balanced measure.

  20. And We have made for you means of livelihood therein, and for those for whom you provide not (or for whom you are not responsible).

  21. Nor is there aught but the treasuries (storehouses) of it are with Us, and We do not send it down save in a noted quantity (ascertainable measure).

  22. And We send forth the impregnating (fertilizing, invigorating, fecundating) winds, and We send down water from the sky, and We give it to you to drink. It is not you who hold the store thereof.

  23. And We, verily, We quicken and kill; and We are of all things the Inheritor.

  24. And We already know the foremost of you, and We know the laggards.

  25. And, verily, it is your Lord who will gather you; verily, He is Wise, Aware.

  26. And We did create man from potter´s (or sound emitting) clay of black mud wrought into form.

  27. And the jinn We created before of smokeless fire (or scorched wind).

  28. When your Lord said to the angels, "Verily, I am creating a mortal from (sound-emitting) clay of black mud wrought into shape;

  29. So when I have fashioned it, and breathed into it of My Spirit, then fall you down before him, prostrating yourselves before him (in obeisance)."

  30. So the angels fell prostrate in obeisance, all of them together,

  31. Save Iblis, who refused to be among the prostrate.

  32. He said, "O Iblis! What ails you that you are not among the prostrate?"

  33. Said he, "Why should I prostrate myself before a mortal whom you have created from potter´s (sound emitting) clay of black mud wrought into form."

  34. He said, "Then get you forth from hence, for verily, you are an outcast (rejected, accursed, pelted).

  35. "And, verily, the curse shall be upon you until the Day of Judgment."

  36. Said he, "O my Lord! Reprieve me until the day when they shall be raised."

  37. He said, "Then, verily, you are of the reprieved

  38. Until the Day of the Appointed Time."

  39. He said, "O my Lord! Because you have put me in the wrong I will surely make wrong seemly for them on earth, and I will put them all in the wrong;

  40. "Save such of your servants as are sincere and purified."

  41. Said He, "This is a Straight Way which leads to Me (or is incumbent upon Me).

  42. Verily, over My servants you have no authority, save such of the misguided (or rebellious) as follow you.

  43. And, verily, hell is promised to them all.

  44. It has seven gates (entrances); to each gate (entrance) is assigned a certain class (or portion)."

  45. Verily, those who fear Allah shall dwell amidst gardens and springs:

  46. (It will be said to them) "Enter you therein in peace and safety!"

  47. And We will strip off whatever ill-feeling is in their breasts; as brethren they rest on couches face to face.

  48. No toil shall touch them therein, nor shall they be expelled there from.

  49. Inform my servants that I am the Forgiving, the Merciful;

  50. And that My doom is a grievous doom.

  51. And inform them concerning Abraham´s guests,

  52. When they came unto him and said, "Peace!", he said, "Verily, we are afraid of you."

  53. They said, "Be not afraid! Verily, we bring you glad tidings of a boy possessing wisdom."

  54. He said, "Do you bring me this glad tidings when old age has overtaken me? Of what then do you bring good tidings!"

  55. They said, "We bring you glad tidings in truth, then be not of those who despair!"

  56. He said, "Who would despair of the mercy of his Lord save those who err?"

  57. He said, "What then is your business, O you messengers?"

  58. They said, "Verily, we are sent unto a people deeply in guilt;

  59. "Save only the household (family or adherents) of Lot, all of them we are certainly charged to save,

  60. "Except his wife, of whom we have ascertained that she shall be of those who stay behind."

  61. And when the messengers came unto the adherents of Lot,

  62. He said, "Verily, you are a people whom I recognize not (or of uncommon appearance)."

  63. They said, "Yea, we have come to you to accomplish that whereof they keep disputing.

  64. "And we bring you the truth (or the inevitable), and, verily, we are truth-tellers!

  65. "Travel then with your household in the deep darkness of the night, and follow you their rear; and let not any one of you turn round to look back; but go on to where you are commanded."

  66. And We made plain for him the decree that the uttermost one of these people should be cut off on the morrow.

  67. Then the people of the city came, glad at the tidings (of the arrival of the young men).

  68. Said Lot, "Verily, these are my guests, therefore disgrace me not;

  69. "But fear Allah, and put me not to shame."

  70. They said, "Have we not forbidden you to speak for all in the world?"

  71. He said, "Here are my daughters, if do it you must."-

  72. By your life (O Muhammad)! In their frenzy of intoxication (passion) they went blindly (distractedly) to and fro.

  73. And the mighty blast caught them at dawn.

  74. And We turned their cities upside down, and rained down on them brimstones hard as baked clay.

  75. Behold! In this is a sign to those who by tokens understand (or can read the signs).

  76. And, verily, the cities were on a high road that still remains.

  77. Verily, in this is a sign for those who believe.

  78. And the companions of the Wood (Midian), too, were unjust;

  79. And We took vengeance on them, and, verily, they were both on an open highway, plain to see.

  80. And the companions of Al-Hijr (the Rocky Tract) also rejected the messengers.

  81. And We brought them Our revelations, but they did turn away there from.

  82. And they used to hew out dwellings from the mountain to dwell in safety.

  83. But the mighty blast seized them in the morning;

  84. And that which they counted as gain availed them naught.

  85. We created not the heavens and the earth and all that is between them both, save with truth. And, verily, the Hour is surely coming; then do you forgive with a gracious forgiveness.

  86. Verily, your Lord He is the Master Creator, the All-knowing.

  87. We have already given you the Seven Oft-Repeated (the verses of the first chapter of the Quran), and the mighty Quran.

  88. Let not your eyes strain after what We have allowed certain classes among them to enjoy, nor grieve for them; but lower your wing (in tenderness) to the believers,

  89. And say, "Verily, I, even I, am a plain Warner."

  90. Such as We sent down for those who make divisions,

  91. Those who break the Quran into separate parts.

  92. Them, by your Lord! We shall question, one and all,

  93. About what they used to do.

  94. Therefore, proclaim what you are commanded, and withdraw from the idolaters.

  95. Verily, We are enough defence for you against the scoffers.

  96. Who place other gods along with Allah; but they at length shall come to know!

  97. And well know We that your breast was at times oppressed by what they say.

  98. But hymn the praises of your Lord, and be you of those who make prostrations (or obeisance).

  99. And serve your Lord until there comes unto you the Hour that is certain (death).
