Hamid S. Aziz - Sura: 27. An-Naml - The Naml

  1. Save those who believe and do good works, and remember Allah much, and defend themselves after they are wronged. Those who do wrong will come to know with what a turn they shall be turned.

  2. TA SIN. These are the verses of the Quran, a book that clarifies;

  3. A guidance and glad tidings to the believers,

  4. Who establish regular worship and give regular charity and are sure of the Hereafter.

  5. Lo!, As for those who believe not in the Hereafter, We have made for them their works fair-seeming, and they shall wander blindly on.

  6. These are they who shall have grievous torment, and theirs in the Hereafter shall be the greatest loss.

  7. Verily, you receive this Quran from the presence of the Wise, the All-knowing One.

  8. (Remember) When Moses said to his people, "Verily, I perceive a fire, I will bring you there from news; or I will bring you a burning brand that you may be warmed."

  9. 27:8 But when he reached it he was called, with the words, "Blessed is He Who is in the Fire, and He Who is round about it! And glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!

  10. "O Moses! Verily, I am Allah, the Mighty, the Wise;

  11. "Throw down your staff!" But when he saw it writhing as though it was a snake, he turned fleeing, and looked not back. (But it was said to him) "O Moses! Fear not; verily, the messengers fear not in My presence.

  12. Save only those who have done wrong and then substitute good for evil; and, verily, I am Forgiving, Merciful!

  13. "Put your hand in they bosom, it shall come forth white without stain (or hurt); one of nine signs to Pharaoh and his people; verily, they are a rebellious, transgressing people."

  14. But when Our signs came to them visibly (that should have opened their eyes), they said, "This is obvious sorcery!"

  15. And they denied them, though their souls acknowledged them, for spite and arrogance; but behold the nature of the consequences for the evildoers (transgressors)!

  16. And We gave David and Solomon knowledge; and they both said, "Praise belongs to Allah, Who hath favoured us over many of His believing servants."

  17. And Solomon was David´s heir. He said, "O you people! We have been taught the language of birds, and we have been given abundance; verily, this is manifest grace!"

  18. And assembled for Solomon were his hosts of the Jinn and of mankind, and birds, and they were marshalled in battle order;

  19. Until, when they came upon the Valley of the Ants, an ant said, "O you ants! Enter your dwellings, that Solomon and his hosts crush you not unperceiving (unknowing)."

  20. And he (Solomon) smiled, laughing at her speech, and said, "O Lord! Excite (cause) me to be thankful for Thy favour, wherewith Thou hast favoured me and my parents, and to do righteousness which may please Thee; and include me by Thy Grace amongst Thy righteous servants!"

  21. And he reviewed the birds, and said, "How is it that I see not the hoopoe (perhaps used as a spy, messenger or observer or symbolizing one)? Is he then amongst the absent?

  22. I will surely punish him with a severe penalty; or I will slay him unless he brings me clear authority (or reason for his absence)."

  23. But he was not long in coming, and said, "I have compassed (covered territory or found out) what you compassed (covered or understood) not; for I come unto you from Sheba with sure information:

  24. "Verily, I found a woman ruling over them, and she was given abundance of all things, and she had a mighty throne;

  25. "And I found her and her people worshipping the sun instead of Allah, for Satan had made their works fair-seeming to them, and turned them away from the Way (of Truth), so that they are not guided right.

  26. "So they will not worship Allah, Who brings forth the secrets in the heavens and the earth, and knows what they hide and what they manifest.

  27. "Allah, there is no God but He, the Lord of the Mighty Throne!"

  28. Said he (Solomon), "We will see whether you have told the truth, or whether you are of those who lie.

  29. "Go with this my letter and throw it before them, then turn away from them, and see what answer they return."

  30. Said she (the Queen of Sheba after she had received the letter), "O you chiefs! Verily, a noble letter has been thrown before me.

  31. "It is from Solomon, and, verily, it is as follows, ´In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

  32. "Exalt not yourself against me, but come to me as those who Surrender (unto Allah i.e. as a Muslim)"

  33. She said, "You chiefs! Pronounce for me in my affair (or advise me). I never decide an affair until you testify for me."

  34. They said, "We are endowed with strength, and endowed with martial prowess; but the command is yours, so consider what you will command."

  35. She said, "Verily, kings when they enter a city, despoil it, and demean the mighty ones of its people; thus they will do.

  36. "But, verily, I am going to send to them a gift, and will wait to see with what answer the messengers return."

  37. And when the envoy came to Solomon, he (Solomon) said, "Do you offer me wealth, when what Allah has given me is better than what He has given to you? Nay, it is you (not I) who rejoice (exult) in your gifts.

  38. "Return unto them, for we will surely come to them with hosts which they cannot resist; and we will surely drive them out thence with shame and they will be humbled."

  39. Said he, "O you chiefs! Which of you will bring me her throne before they come unto me surrendering?"

  40. Said an Ifrit (a powerful and cunning demon) of the Jinn, "I will bring it you before you can rise up from your chair of council, for I am strong for such work, and trustworthy."

  41. He who had the knowledge of the Book said, "I will bring it to you before your glance can turn." And when he saw it set down beside him, he (Solomon) said, "This is of my Lord´s grace that He may try me whether I give thanks or am ungrateful. Whoever gives thanks, gives thanks for the good of his own soul; but he who is ungrateful - truly, my Lord is rich (independent, free of all needs) and Bountiful."

  42. Said he, "Disguise for her throne; let us see whether she is guided, or whether she is of those who receive no guidance."

  43. And when she came it was said unto her, "Is this your throne?" She said, "It was just like this (it could be the one)." and Solomon said, "We were given knowledge before her, and we had Surrendered (to Allah).

  44. "But that which she worshipped beside Allah diverted her; for she came of people who had no faith."

  45. And it was said to her, "Enter the court." And when she saw it, she thought it was a pool, and she bared her legs (tucked up her skirt to go into it). Said he, "Verily, it is a court paved with glass!" Said she, "My Lord! Verily, I have wronged my soul, but I do now Surrender ( i.e. in Islam) with Solomon to the Lord of the Worlds!"

  46. And We sent unto Thamud their brother Salih, saying "Serve Allah;" but behold! they became two parties quarrelling!

  47. Said he, "O my people! Why do you hasten on evil rather than good? Why do you not ask forgiveness of Allah that you may obtain mercy."

  48. They said, "We auger evil of you and those who are with you. Said he, "Your augury is in Allah´s hands; nay, but you are a people who are being tested."

  49. And there were in the city nine persons who despoiled the land and reformed not.

  50. Said they, "Swear to each other by Allah that we will surely fall on him and his people by night; then we will surely say unto his family, ´We witnessed not the destruction of his household; and we are truth tellers!´"

  51. And they plotted a plot, and We plotted a plot while they perceive not.

  52. Behold, what was the nature of the consequences of their plotting, for lo! We destroyed them and their people, everyone.

  53. Thus are their houses in utter ruin, for that they did wrong; verily, in that is a sign to people who have knowledge.

  54. But We saved those who believed and who did fear (or avoid evil).

  55. And Lot when he said to his people, "Do you commit abomination knowingly?

  56. Must you needs lust after men instead of women? Nay! You are a senseless people."

  57. But the answer of his people was only to say, "Drive out Lot´s family from your city, for they are a folk who would keep pure."

  58. But We saved him and his family except his wife; her We destined to be of those who lingered behind;

  59. And We rained down upon them a shower, and dreadful is the rain for those who have been warned.

  60. Say, "Praise belongs to Allah; and peace be upon His servants whom He has chosen! Is Allah best, or what they associate as partners with Him?"

  61. He who created the heavens and the earth; and sends down upon you water from the sky wherewith We cause to grow beautiful orchards, whose trees it has never been yours to grow; is there a God besides Him? Nay, but they are a people who ascribe equals with Him!

  62. He who made the earth a fixed abode, and placed rivers in its folds; and placed upon it firm mountains; and placed a barrier between the two waters; is there any God besides Allah? Nay, but most of them know not!

  63. He who answers the distressed when he calls upon Him and removes the evil; and has made you Vicegerents (or Successors) in the earth; is there a God besides Allah? Little do they reflect.

  64. He who guides you in the darkness of the land and of the sea; and He who sends winds as heralds of His mercy; is there a God besides Allah? High exalted be Allah above what they associate with Him!

  65. He who began the creation and then reproduces it; and who provides for you from the heaven and the earth; is there any God besides Allah? Bring your proofs if you are truthful!

  66. Say, "None in the heavens or the earth knows the unseen save only Allah; and they perceive not when they shall be raised!"

  67. Nay, but does their knowledge reach to the Hereafter? Nay, but they are in doubt concerning it. Nay, but they are blind thereto.

  68. And those who disbelieved say, "What! When we have become dust and (or like) our fathers, shall we indeed be brought forth?

  69. "We were promised this, we and our fathers before us, this is nothing but ancient fables."

  70. Say, "Travel in the land and see the nature of the sequel for the guilty!

  71. And grieve not you for them, and be not in distress because of what they plot."

  72. They say, "When shall this promise be if you do tell the truth?"

  73. Say; "It may be that a part of what you would hasten is pressing close behind you!

  74. But, verily, your Lord is full of grace to mankind, but most of them will not be thankful;

  75. Verily, your Lord knows what their breasts conceal and what they manifest;

  76. And there is no secret thing in the heaven or the earth, save that it is in a Clear Record.

  77. Verily, this Quran relates to the people of Israel most of that whereon they do dispute;

  78. And, lo! It is a guidance and a mercy to the believers.

  79. Verily, your Lord decides between them by His Wisdom (or Judgment), for He is the Mighty, the Wise.

  80. Rely you then upon Allah, for you stand on obvious Truth.

  81. Verily, you can not make the dead to hear, nor can you make the deaf to hear the call when they turn to flee;

  82. Nor can you guide the blind out of their error. You can make none to hear, save those who believe Our revelations and have Surrendered.

  83. And when the word is fulfiled against them We will bring forth a beast out of the earth (gross materialism?) that shall speak to (or wound) them, because mankind had not faith in Our revelations.

  84. And the Day when We will gather from every nation a troop of those who denied our revelations, and they shall be marshalled;

  85. Until, when they come before their Lord, He will say, "Did you deny my revelations when you had compassed no knowledge thereof? Or what is it that you were doing?"

  86. And the Word shall be fulfiled concerning them because they did wrong, and they will not be able to speak.

  87. Did they not see that how We have made the night for them to rest in, and the day to see by? Verily, in that are signs to people who believe.

  88. And the Day when the trumpet shall be blown and all who are in the heavens and the earth shall be startled in fear (or horrified), save whom Allah wills. And all shall come unto Him, humbled.

  89. And you see the mountains (things seemingly firm and reliable) which you do deem firm, drifting away like the passing of the clouds - the work of Allah who orders all things. Verily, He is well aware of what you do!

  90. He who brings a good deed shall have better than its worth; and from the alarm of that day they shall be safe:

  91. But those who bring an evil deed shall be thrown down upon their faces in the Fire. Shall you be rewarded save for what you did?

  92. (Say) I (Muhammad) am commanded to serve the Lord of this land (Mecca) which He has made sacred, and unto Whom belong all things. And I am commanded to be of those who Surrender (unto Him),

  93. And to recite the Quran; And he who is guided right, is guided right only for his own soul; and as for him who goes astray - say unto him, "I am only of those who warn!"
