Hamid S. Aziz - Sura: 31. Luqman

  1. Therefore be patient; surely the promise of Allah is true and let not those who have no certainty of faith shake your firmness.

  3. These are the verses (revelations) of the Wise Book,

  4. A guidance and a mercy to those who do good,

  5. Those who establish regular prayer and give charity, and who are sure of the Hereafter;

  6. These are in true guidance from their Lord, and these are the Successful.

  7. But amongst men are those who purchase (pay for) idle tales without knowledge (or meaning), to lead astray men from the path of Allah, and to make a jest of it; for them is shameful woe!

  8. And when Our signs are recited to such a one, he turns away in arrogance as though he heard them not, as if there was deafness in both his ears. Announce to him a grievous penalty.

  9. Verily, those who believe and do right, for them are Gardens of Bliss,

  10. Wherein they will abide; it is a promise of Allah in truth, and He is the Mighty, the Wise.

  11. He created the heavens without supports that you can see, and He placed upon the earth firm mountains lest it should shake with you; and He dispersed therein all kinds of beasts; and We send down from the heavens water, and We caused plants of every noble kind to grow therein.

  12. This is the Creation of Allah; show me that which others beside Him have created. Nay, the unjust are in obvious error.

  13. Verily, We did give unto Luqman wisdom, saying, "Thank Allah; for he who thanks Allah is only thankful for his own soul; and he who is ungrateful - verily, Allah is Absolute (Independent, Self-sufficient), Owner of all praise."

  14. And (remember) when Luqman said to his son while admonishing him, "O my boy! Associate none with Allah, for, verily, such association is a mighty wrong."-

  15. For We have commended his parents to men - his mother bore him with travail upon travail; and it took two years to wean him - "Be thankful to Me and to your parents; for unto Me is the journeying.

  16. "But if they strive with you to make you ascribe unto Me partners of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not. Consort with them in the world with kindness, and follow the way of him who turns repentant unto Me. Then unto Me is your return, and I will inform you of that which you used to do.

  17. (Said Luqman) "O my dear son! Verily, if there were the weight of a grain of mustard seed and it were hidden in the rock, or in the heaven, or in the earth, Allah would bring it forth. Verily, Allah is Subtle, Aware.

  18. "O my dear son! Establish worship, and enjoin what is just and forbid iniquity; be patient (constant) whatever befalls you, verily, that is of the steadfast heart of affairs.

  19. "And twist not your cheek in scorn towards folk, nor walk haughtily (or insolently) in the land; verily, Allah loves not any arrogant boaster:

  20. "But be modest in your bearing and subdue your voice; lo! The harshest of all voices is the voice of the ass."

  21. Have you not seen that Allah has subjected to you what is in the heavens and what is in the earth, and has poured down upon you His favours, outwardly and inwardly? But amongst men are those who wrangle about Allah, without knowledge, and without guidance, and without an illuminating book (Scriptures that gives light and enlightens).

  22. And when it is said to them, "Follow what Allah has sent down;" they say, "Nay! We will follow wherein we found our fathers." - What! Even if Satan calls them to the torment of the blaze?

  23. But he who Surrenders his purpose unto Allah (i.e. becomes a Muslim), and does good, he has grasped the firm handle; with Allah rests the issue of all affairs.

  24. But he who disbelieves, let not his disbelief grieve you; to Us is their return, and We will inform them of what they did; for, verily, Allah is aware of what is in the heart of men.

  25. We will let them enjoy themselves a little; then We will force them to the unrelenting doom.

  26. And if you should ask them who created the heavens and the earth, they will surely say, "Allah." Say, "Praise be to Allah!" but most of them know not.

  27. Unto Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and that is in the earth; verily, Allah, He is the Absolute, the Owner of praise.

  28. And were the trees that are in the earth pens, and the sea ink with seven more seas to swell it, the Words of Allah would not be exhausted; verily, Allah is Mighty, Wise.

  29. Your creation and your rising again are but as that of a single soul; verily, Allah is Hearer, Seer.

  30. Have you not seen that Allah joins the night to the day, and joins the day to the night, and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running unto an appointed time? And that Allah is well informed of what you do?

  31. That is because Allah, He is Truth (or the only Reality), and because what you call on beside Him is the False, and because Allah, He is the Sublime, the Great.

  32. Do you not see that the ship rides on in the sea by the favour of Allah, that He may show you of His wonders? Verily, in that are signs to every grateful heart.

  33. And when a wave like a shadow covers them, they call on Allah, being sincere in their religion; and when He saves them to the shore, then amongst them are some who halt between two opinions. But none denies Our signs save every perfidious disbeliever.

  34. O mankind! Fear (keep your duty to) your Lord and dread the Day when the parent shall not be able to avail the child in aught, nor shall the child avail aught for its parent. Lo! the promise of Allah is true! Say, "Let not the life of this world beguile you; nor let not the Chief Deceiver beguile you concerning Allah.
